IBCQ - Indian Born Confused Quizzer?

Hey,

After yet another stint at hibernation (we do that very well ) here is a sampler of 3 questions on India.

The quizmaster conducted a recent successful India Quiz – Chakraview 2008 at Seattle which was attended by over 150 people and was conducted as a promotion for AID India (Seattle chapter). A report on that quiz shall follow …

Questions

1. Although Southern India is mainly thought to be the origin of this game - Yemen, Ethiopia, China, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka are other cited origins. Experts opine that the game may have been independently developed in several cases as a mixture of billiards and shuffleboard. The theory gains credence given that the modern name of the game is a corruption of the English word for “Shot” used in one of the suggested parent games. National Championships are held in Philippines, Australia, Denmark and China each with their own variations. Which game?

2. This Indian Brand was started in 1952 apparently on a request by Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru was concerned that Indian Women were spending precious foreign exchange on cosmetics and requested JRD Tata to 'fix' the problem with an indigenous solution. Tata gave life to the brand as a 100% subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills and named it after a French opera. The opera itself is set in 19th century India and named after the chief character (an Indian Goddess). Enough clues, which brand?

3. The Kedgeree is a dish consisting of flaked fish, boiled rice, eggs and butter. It originated amongst the British Colonials in India and was introduced to the UK as a popular breakfast in the Victorian times, part of the then fashionable Anglo-Indian cuisine. Which Indian dish was this derived from? (The name of the dish is a derivation as well)
