Although the origin of this phrase is based on an alteration of an older form, it is supposed to have come from poker. In poker, to gain entry to play a round you have to make a small bet called an ‘ante’. Two bits made an ante (two bits = 1 quarter).This analogy was used in common literature and has led to something we say which is expected to allow us gain entry into a conversation. What phrase?
